General Election Information

City elections are held every May. In odd numbered years, Places 2, 4, and 6 and the Mayor positions are up for election. In even numbered years, Places 1, 3 and 5 positions are up for election. The City Charter, Article V (PDF) sets out the provisions for filing for office.


This year Places 1, 3, and 5 are up for election.  An Application for a Place on the Ballot can be obtained by clicking the link or requesting a copy from the City Secretary by email ( or by phone (972-564-7302).

The first day to file the Application for a Place on the Ballot is Wednesday, January 15, 2020.  All Applications must be an original, signed and notarized copy and filed in person with the City Secretary.  We cannot accept an Application by email.  The last day to file an Application for a Place on the Ballot is 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 14, 2020.

Notice of Postponement of May 2, 2020 General and Special Elections

On or about March 13, 2020, the Governor of the State of Texas certified that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) poses an imminent threat of disaster and, under the authority vested in the Governor by Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, declared a state of disaster in every county in the State of Texas.

On or about March 18, 2020, the Governor issued a Proclamation suspending certain sections of the Texas Election Code, among others, to allow political subdivisions of the State that would otherwise hold elections on May 2, 2020, to postpone general and special elections to the next uniform election date, which will occur on November 3, 2020. 

On March 19, 2020, the City Council held a Special Emergency Meeting and voted to approve an Ordinance to postpone the City’s May 2, 2020, General and Special Elections until November 3, 2020.  To see the Ordinance in full, click on "Ordinance" above.
